Investment Glossary

Dividend Yield: Annual percentage of return earned by a company. The yield is determined by dividing the amount of the annual dividends per share by the current share price.

Dividend Pay Ratio: The dividend payout ratio is a key financial metric used to determine the sustainability of a company’s dividend payment program. It is the amount of dividends paid to shareholders relative to the total net income of a company.

Price-to-Sales: The price per share of a stock divided by total revenue (sales) per share. For a stock portfolio, the ratio is the weighted average price-to-sales ratio of the stocks it holds.

Price-to-Earnings: The price per share of a stock divided by earnings (net income) per share. For a stock portfolio, the ratio is the weighted average price-to-earnings ratio of the stocks it holds.

Price-to-Book: The price per share of a stock divided by book value (net worth) per share. For a stock portfolio, the ratio is the weighted average price-to-book ratio of the stocks it holds.

Price-to-Free Cash Flow: Price-to-free cash flow is an equity valuation metric that compares a company’s per-share market price to its free cash flow. This metric is very similar to the valuation metric of price to cash flow but is considered a more exact measure because it uses free cash flow, which subtracts capital expenditures (CAPEX) from a company’s total operating cash flow, thereby reflecting the actual cash flow available to fund non-asset-related growth.
Price-to-Cash Flow – The price-to-cash flow ratio is a multiple that compares a company’s market value to its operating cash flow or its stock price per share to operating cash flow per share. This multiple works well for companies that have large non-cash expenses such as depreciation.

Net Debt/Equity: The net debt-to-equity ratio is a leverage ratio, which shows how much of a company’s financing or capital structure is made up of debt versus issuing shares of equity. The net debt-to-equity ratio is calculated by dividing a company’s total short-term and long-term debt less cash and cash equivalents by its shareholders’ equity and is used to determine if a company is using too much or too little debt or equity to finance its growth.

Return on Assets: Return on assets is a profitability ratio calculated by dividing net income by total assets. Return on assets measures how efficient a company’s management is in earning a profit from their economic resources or assets on their balance sheet.

Return on Equity: Return on equity is a measure of financial performance calculated by dividing net income by shareholders’ equity. This ratio is considered a gauge of a corporation’s profitability and how efficient it is in generating profits. The higher the ROE, the more efficient a company’s management is at generating income and growth from its equity financing.

Beta: Beta is a measure of the volatility — or systematic risk — of a security or portfolio compared to the market as a whole (S&P 500 Index). Stocks with betas higher than 1.0 can be interpreted as more volatile than the S&P 500.
